solidThinking MODELER - the winner of 1993 NeXTWORLD Best of Breed Award - is the advanced 3D modeler for NEXTSTEP that was completely based on Pixar's RenderMan. It provided unrestricted access to RenderMan functionalities from every phase of the design process to the final rendering process. It was aimed at industrial and interior designers, architects, town planners, advertising managers, publishing consultants, video producers and artists. You could build complex 3D models starting from geometric primitives, free-form profiles and DXF, TIFF, TDDD, WAVEFRONT, OpenCAD and RIB files.

The Modeling module, the standard one, included: a complex primitives generator, interactive 3D profile editor with Bezier curves; editable 3D text with trimmed curves; extrusion, lathe and skin on multiple 3D profiles, parches and filled surfaces; automatic extraction of 3D paths from surfaces; automatic refinement of curves and surfaces; precise surface points editing; Boolean operations of addition, subtraction and intersection; advanced shading controls with shaders that could be customized; a powerful icon-based attributes library; bitmapped images that could be convened into textures; an object hierarchy browser; unlimited number of light sources; automatic generation of shadows and reflection maps; unlimited output resolution; and an application programming interface for custom objects and transformations.

Features:

  • User-friendly interface with four views: three orthogonal (top, front,side) and one perspective (camera view) with wireframe, flat shading,Gouraud shading and photo-realistic visualizations.
  • Geometric primitives: polygonal objects, quadrics (sphere, cylinder,etc.), bi-linear and bi-cubic parametric surfaces (Bezier, BSpline,Tensed, etc.) and NURBS (Not Uniform Rational BSpline). Geometrical shapes could be modified one into another through a metamorphosis algorithm. solidThinking MODELER supports Boolean operations of addition, subtraction, and intersection for the creation of complex objects. Matrix operators (translator and rotator) for symmetrical and repetitive objects.
  • Point Edit: control points that define paths and polygonal objects canbe directly edited in the QuadriView panel using standard operators.
  • 2D editor and surface generator: a planar editor with Bezier curves lets you create any complex profile. PostScript fonts could be converted automatically into a series of editable Bezier curves for 3D text. Complex deformations supported are skewing, twisting, tapering,etc.
  • "Curve lofting" allows you to connect different curves to create complex objects and object piping.
  • Lights: unlimited number of light sources through specific shaders. Light types: ambient, distant, point, spot, and every light shader available on your NEXTSTEP system. Automatic shadow creation via RenderMan shading language.
  • Built-in shape browser to quickly select, hide, delete, etc. on a single object and/or groups.
  • Surface parameters: user-define surface properties from bitmap images. Advanced shading controls like texture coordinates, displacement bounds and binary dicing. Automatic environment map generation of reflection of objects.
  • Skinning feature.


Requires NEXTSTEP Release 3.1 or higher. Now shipping in Multi-Architecture Binary (MAB) format.
