CD Studio

CD Studio was a total CD-Rccordable solution tliiic allowed you to create CD-ROMs on your networkcd UNIX workstation. This integrated system consisted of MakeDisc premastering software, the CD Studio intelligent controller and any available at that time, third-party CDRecordable unit; Philips, Sony, Kodak, Yamaha. CD Studio was easy to connect and eliminated the need for a dedicated computer.

MakeDisc gave UNIX users two options that allowed them to take advantage of UNIX file system features and still create discs that were fully ISO 96fi0-compliant:

  • ISO 9660/Rock Ridge - Rock Ridge allowed your CD-ROM to look exactly like a UNIX file system while remaining ISO 9660-compliant.
  • ISO 9660 with translation tables - These translation tables allowed the UNIX file names, symbolic links and deep directories to be used without a Rock Ridge driver.

The graphical user interface made it simple to professionally produce, format and test your own CD-ROM disc image before cutting the disc. The intelligent controller could be networked. During the entire process, the UNIX host computer is free to continue multitasking with no risk of disrupting the disc writing sequence. The CD Studio intelligent controller was also reliable. Using a 1-gigabyte hard drive as a butter frees the host computer from the burden of sustaining the 300 kilobits per second required for the doublespeed writers.
