CraftMan
IMAGINE:
A tool for building stunning multimedia applications. A tool for creating impressive presentations. A tool for building highly productive computer-based training applications. A tool for building graphical interfaces to other applications. A tool for ultra-fast prototyping. A tool for visualizing software ideas.
All this - without any programming in Objective-C!
THEN IMAGINE:
A tool that included a truly object-oriented interpreted scripting language, full color drawing tools, a complete flat-file database manager, animation and full video support. A scripting language that includes a user-friendly debugger and supports easy-to-use inter-application communication.
THEN STOP IMAGINING!
Because Xanthus CraftMan, the programming tool of the 90's made it all possible in desktop computing.
CraftMan was a HyperCard-like multipurpose, multimedia programming tool for NeXTSTEP. It included a powerful and easy-to-use object-oriented scripting language, drawing tools, a flat-file database manager and full video support.
CraftMan was designed for rapid prototyping, computer-based training applications, multimedia presentations and hypertext documents. To allowed easy distribution of multimedia applications, CraftMan came with a free runtime engine that could be distributed freely.
CraftScript was an object-oriented version of Xanthus Common Language (XCL), a uniform scripting language used in all Xanthus software produces with scripting capabilities. XCL gave you a uniform scripting syntax and a common set of basic functions. In addition, XCL allowed you to write external functions in XCL or in Objective C char could be used by any XCL-based application from Xanthus.
Do you have to pay Xanthus to distribute multimedia applications created with CraftMan?
No, the run-time engine that is needed to run a CraftMan program can be distributed freely.
Can you access C-code from CraftMan?
Yes, through the Speaker/Listener interface in NEXTSTEP, CraftMan programs can send messages, pass arguments and get return values from C-code in other applications.
Can you compile CraftMan programs?
No, you always need CraftMan or the run-time engine to run a CraftMan program.
Does CM support live video?
Yes, with a NeXTdimension graphics card.
