PaperOut
PaperOut was a retrieval program for multimedia electronic book CDs. The electronic book standard was defined by Sony for the Sony Data Discman. More than 250 electronic books, including well known encyclopedias and reference books were already available on CD in this format.
The electronic book standard included multimedia features such as hypertext links, graphics, and sound. This standard also offered versatile search functions, such as word, endword, keyword, multi, menu and graphic search. All this made the electronic book standard a very promising technology for electronic publishing.
PaperOut and the powerful NeXTStep user interface make it easy to look up data and articles. The PaperOut package included a CD-ROM XA-driver, which supported the following drives: Sony CDU-8012 (SunCD), Sony CDU-541 (NEXTSTEP CD-ROM), Sony CDU-561, Toshiba XM3301B/BC and Toshiba XM3401B. This driver supported the multisession and double-speed capabilities of the Toshiba XM3401B and the Sony DCU-561. Versions of PaperOut were also available for Microsoft Windows 3.1, Apple Macintosh, Acorn Archimedes and Sun with OpenWindows 2.0/3.0.
