Agency News
OBJECTIVE
Agency news was a multi-user software system for receiving, storing, distributing, browsing, searching and retrieving agency news. The system was composed of client and server software modules. Server software received and processed news, while client software enabled a user to browse, search and retrieve the news in a very sophisticated way.
CLIENT SOFTWARE MODULE
Searching, browsing and retrieving of news from multiple
sources - agencies - was supported. The news could be in
different languages, and could be shown in different fonts
to emphasize the difference in the news source. Searches
could be based on the content of news - search expressions
could contain words, regular expressions, and search keys,
combined with logical operators NOT, AND, OR, and grouped
with parenthesis. Searches could be additionally
constrained with time and agency filters. Frequently used
search expressions could be saved as search keys and used
for searching instead of writing the whole expression every
time. The system administrator could define system keys
that were available system-wide and were read-only. Each
user could define private keys, which could be modified and
removed by the user.
Tabular view of news enables users to browse through news
quickly. For every news the headline, agency, date and time
received, priority, category and keywords could be
displayed. The news items were sorted according to the
order of the attribute columns in the tabular view. The
order of columns, their width, and whether a column will be
displayed, could be visually rearranged by a user with a
mouse.
News could be viewed by opening them in one or more
windows. A user could copy parts of text from these windows
into other applications. The complete news could be saved
on a local file-system by dragging the icon that represents
the news from the news window to the file-system window.
SERVER SOFTWARE MODULE
The number of news sources was practically unlimited,
because the receiving of news could be distributed to
multiple computers. The number of users was also unlimited,
because the system supports replication of the news
databases and distribution of client requests.
The time period for keeping the news could be configured by
the system administrator, so the appropriate amount of news
could be kept in the system on-line. The system could
automatically delete or archive the news that reach the
time limit. Received news could be re-distributed to remote
locations via network and via modems.
