QuickBase
Designed to serve the special
needs of graphically based NEXTSTEP applications, QuickBase
provided advanced features and graphically based tools to
accelerate application development. QuickBase came with
tools for security management, schema design, interface
construction and database manipulation to make database
development and maintenance easy.
QuickBase supported the Advanced Transaction Language
(ATL), a structured database transaction language that was
straightforward and easy to learn. In addition to
supporting standard transaction features such as commit and
rollback, ATL provided commands for broadcasting messages
to end-user applications, executing system calls and
reading/writing UNIX files. QuickBase employed the fastest
techniques for concurrent multi-user access and SQL
transaction processing, making your applications shine in
multi-user environments.

Database manager Start, stop and monitor remote database servers.
User manager Manage users and grant table access to users and user groups.
Alarm Window View alarm tickets generated from starting and stopping databases.
Data Viewer Window View and edit table information in tabular form. Data Viewer will stay current when changes are made by other users.
Schema Builder provided editing facilities for table schema design. You could specify tables, table columns and types and then create or modify database tables.
Application Builder Palette provided everything you needed to build sophisticated database applications that took advantage of application notification, fill-in-form searching and record locking.
ISQL was a terminal based program for executing SQL and receiving formatted results back from the database. Columns for results were automatically sized to fit the data contained within them. This program provided an easy way to store SQL procedures in the database, as well as import data from other databases.
qbstart & qbstop allowed you to start and stop databases on any host from a shell script or command prompt. Password protection was provided so that only authorized users may start databases.
