Minerva

Minerva was a tool of special interest to healthcare organizations. It was a distributed, concept-based, information retrieval system. Using a single NeXTStep interface, users could enter a concept, text pattern, or other criteria to be used in search.

Minerva nonintrusively interrogated all known databases on registered networks, including textual, relational and multimedia, for the information in question. Minerva allowed uniform and flexible access to heterogeneous clinical data resources, including decision support applications, and hospital information systems running on a variety of hardware. Users could review or save results for later use and could employ other NeXTStep applications to analyze and manipulate data. Minerva also provided knowledge engineering tools for building and maintaining institution-specific information retrieval concepts.
