Tarre

Compression and Archive Utility

Tarre was the compression and archive utility for computers running NeXTStep. Its superior integration with the Workspace Manager made creating and using compressed, archived, or split files easier than ever.

You could create a compressed archive by selecting a folder in the File Viewer and choosing Archive from the Services menu. Tarre's archive browser allowed users to inspect and extract files in a compressed archive without first uncompressing the archive.

Tarre's Split service enabled you to split large files and folders into a number of smaller files. These smaller files could then be transmitted via electronic mail or stored on low-capacity, removable media such as floppy disks.

Tarre used the standard UNIX programs tar and compress to read and write archive files that were compatible with virtually every UNIX system. Whether you used archives for performing daily backups, efficiently transferring files over the network, or freeing up space on a hard disk, Tarre proved to be an invaluable tool.

You could compress and backup your files on a regular basis with Tarre, the easy-to-use compression and archive utility from Aurora Software. Compress files by as much as 93% by simply dragging them into the Tarre application icon. Or, backup files and folders into archive files, which could be stored on removable media for safekeeping. Tarre used the standard UNIX programs tar and compress to read and write archive files that are compatible with virtually every UNIX system.

Using Tarre was as easy as using the File Viewer of the Workspace ManagerTM. Drag a file into the Tarre application icon to compress it and double-click on a compressed file to decompress it. Dragging files and folders into the Tarre application icon would archive them into an archive file, and double-clicking on an archive will open it:

Tarre Features:

  • Certain files (a number of TIFF files, for instance) could be compressed to 7% of their original size.
  • Tarre displayed the contents of archive files in file browsers without extracting the contents to disk.
  • Could extract—even open!—individual files from archives without extracting the archive to disk.
  • Compressed and archived files via the services menu.
  • Supported standard UNIX tar and compress file formats.
